Title: Transmission Melancholia
Duration: 09.20
Media: 35mm, s16mm transferred to 2k video, colour and black & white, stereo sound
Transmission Melancholia reflects on infrastructures that continue to transmit long after their original ideals have faded - signals persisting in orbit, suspended between progress and isolation. It considers place as a portrait of us by looking at place in the public realm, as private, and as the fantastical.
In the film, we’re confronted with two landscapes. One is a landscape of 1960s tower blocks - rectangular, brutal, functional and machine like. The other is deep-space satellite dishes - highly autonomous, precise and geometric. With no obvious signs of human life, sound and visual signals are transmitted from the tower blocks and received by the satellites - as if the two are in communication with one another.
