Transmission Melancholia engages with technological and cultural histories on the South coast of England, reflecting on infrastructures that continue to transmit long after their original ideals have faded - suspended between progress and isolation. 

With no obvious signs of human life, visual and sonic signals are transmitted between two architectural landscapes, as if the two are in communication with one another. What connects these sites is the defunct communications satellite, Telstar 1, operating as an intermediary.

It is atmosphere, rather than narrative that governs what the work asks us to feel. Modes of the weird and eerie are instrumental in allowing the work to drift towards unrealised science fiction, where the metaphor of space becomes a means to rethink modernity and the landscapes’ unrealised possibilities. Here, technological relics are not dormant, but continuing to transmit quietly.
